NatNewsWatch: Canada delays expanding medical assistance in dying to include mental illness, but it’s still a policy built on quicksand
Whatever happened to people just going down into a cellar and hanging themselves from the ceiling supports? In my day (OMG, I just said "in my day"), that's what they did when they meant business. No muss; no fuss; no evil bureaucracy to consult. No, I don't think I'm being callous. A lot of this current discussion seems to be a sneaky way of achieving population reduction while appearing sympathetic and ever-so-caring. Having said that, I won't want to hang around if I end up not being able to take care of myself. But I sure as heck won't allow myself to be dragged through a gamut of "professionals" (a term that is also applied to prostitutes) attempting to appear kind and sympathetic. Sympathy is the last thing I'd want to have to suffer through. If and when I decide to say goodbye, it will be because I'm too sick and/or tired of the stuff that's coming down from our so-called servants of democracy. And I won't ask permission, either. Odd that, when countries find it profitable to go to war, they encourage the willingness of young people to die "for their country". That in itself has got to be a mental aberration. If everybody refused to go to war for the grinches, well ... there'd be no war. Sadly, during WWII soldiering was the only job a young man could get. Further extensive discussion on the MAID topic at Globe & Mail. ========================================================================== 2. Doggonit! The Mutt got sprung. CBC: Dog who pounced on Ontario city councillor is freed by court, after deal struck with owners
(A likely indication that "she" herself owns at least one dog that has assaulted at least one human.) And since when is a dog a "who"? S.B. Dog that pounced, not "who" pounced. Whenever I go out to walk "overtown" I'm invariably confronted by dogs being walked by owners. Occasionally an owner pulls the animal to the side away from me, but often I'm the one who has to somehow create a distance between us. In my apartment building I was once leapt at and smacked in the chest 3 times in succession by an attention-needy yapper, loose in the corridor -- almost knocking me over. (I wrote a note to its daddy reminding him of the City leash rules and it never happened again.) I really don't understand that so many people need dogs to make their lives feel complete. Most of those animals come from puppy mills, dogs that never knew their own mothers. They're like unruly children and their human "parents" help keep the mills in business. Few people know that dogs are descendants of wolves and retain wild characteristics. Nor do most people bother to take instruction themselves in how to properly train and relate to their dogs. To make a short story longer, read this -- my really painful experience of a completely unprovoked dog attack that occurred when I lived in the West end of Kingston, while walking down a street, minding my own business. Be sure to also read blogger Penny's comment below that article. Rarely, surprisingly, an occasional dog walker will see me coming and move completely off the walk until I've been able to get past. I asked a man a couple of days ago, "Did you pull over for me or for the dogs?" He grinned and said, "I always try to give people some space. It's like I'm walking a couple of drunks." Well, that shows he hasn't learned how to train them, but it also proves he cares about people too, and has a sense of humour as well. So I thanked him. Insanity of the Week: GlobalNews: Those who have not had a COVID-19 vaccine have an increased risk of being involved in a traffic crash in Ontario, a new study suggests. Only in Ontario, you say?
(I always enjoy underlining the weasel words.) Don't worry too much. As the headline says: it's only a suggestion. One that would, of course, be submitted to an American Journal -- because being published in a Canadian journal is no big deal? It's extremely important for one's academic career that one is published periodically in a "leading" journal. I'm reminded of a Queen's U. prof, from way back when, who was pressured to "publish" when he wasn't sure he had anything new to say at that moment. An older colleague advised him, "Write some sh't, any sh't'll do". Being a lauded teacher and methodical researcher is just not enough. Public appearances must be kept up for funding purposes. The real purpose of the study in question is revealed in the final line:
True story: I was almost hit by a car making a quick left turn -- in late 2019. The driver was clearly too old, nervous and/or impatient to be behind the wheel, but, as luck would have it, he missed me entirely, and only managed to overturn my grocery cart -- and scare me half to death. (I'm a person who walks; a dangerous, but supposedly healthy way to get around.) Sure enough, that old guy wasn't vaccinated for "Covid" -- because nobody was back then. =========================================================================== 4. Trudeau vs Poilievre CTV: 'Everything is broken in this country' says Poilievre CTV: No it isn't, says Trudeau
I don't know what he thinks he's saying when he says "our democracy", but I doubt many people have felt free over the past several years, so maybe he just doesn't have a clear idea of what actually constitutes "democracy". When he says: "Let me be perfectly clear" -- is he echoing Freeland or is it that she echoes him? She usually says it just before giving a non-answer. I can hear the little yapper down the hall from me as we speak. The smaller the dog, the more vicious the bark, it seems.
