Who Are the Real Friends of Science?

Who Are the Real Friends of Science?

Probably not the ones who predicted doom by 2016 and have now moved the goal post to 2031!

After notifying Dr. Roger Higgs that I had (May 7) made good use of his 25-point argument against human-caused global warming (specifically CO2), he responded with thanks and a link to Friends of Science which has published on its  blog  a recent letter he had written to the Sunday Times that may or may not be published in The Times this coming Sunday -- since, like most corporate media outlets, The Times is deep into the carbon pollution theory of climate change.

I'm probably not alone in having been unfamiliar with Friends of Science (although they obviously have a wide audience), mainly because my own blog covers a wide range of political topics that take up a lot of my time and mental energy, and also because a Google search for "climate change" does not readily produce a link to the Friends of Science website (as is also the case now with most independent political bloggers) -- a definite advantage to proponents of the carbon theory.

Duck Duck Go is a much better (and privacy conscious) search engine, but even it gets bogged down in the pronouncements of the IPCC, the corporate media and NASA, enhancing the impression that human activity in the form of carbon pollution is driving the dreaded "climate change" that has struck fear into the hearts even of children.

I admit to a certain amount of bias in that, if the term "Friends of Science" had come up in a search, the title would have registered in my mind as support of the going theory, since Science is touted as being fully supportive of the CO2 theory.  Well, it isn't -- although, being quite leftish, I still have to deal with the fact that it was founded and is supported by right wing organizations and oil companies, and that there are oil specialists among the geologists involved.

Canadian retired professor, Dr. Tim Ball, one of the founders of Friends of Science, was himself accused of being in the pay of oil producers, though he and others were quick to convincingly refute that claim.

It has occurred to me that the fuel industry wins no matter what, since if it's used less by the average citizen, a good supply will then be available for the interminable war industry, as well as manufacturing industries that have the advantage of passing on any left-over expense in the process of "cap and trade" to the ordinary consumer of their products.

Here are two articles in the National Review from back in 2015 that make the proponents of man-made climate change look a whole lot more bought and paid for than the naysayers:

NationalReview (2015): Global Warming: Follow the Money
  • ... while the energy industry funds both sides of the climate debate, the government/foundation monies go only toward research that advances the warming regulatory agenda. With a clear public-policy outcome in mind, the government/foundation gravy train is a much greater threat to scientific integrity.

NationalReview (2015): On Climate, Science and Politics Are Diverging
  • Sea ice at the North Pole has long been a focus of alarm. Just after collecting his Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, Al Gore jetted off to the Bali climate conference to declare a planetary emergency, predicting that the entire north polar ice cap would disappear in as little as five to seven years. The Arctic should have been ice-free by last summer.

Even NASA (though big on carbon theory) had to admit that the shrinking polar ice has rebounded. (Forbes) That doesn't preclude NASA, however, from creating a website dedicated to preaching the carbon theory to kids.

Speaking of kids: Friends of Science tells a story about Greta and friends that you're unlikely to readily find in the corporate media, and it answers my question as to who provided those marching kids with their very professional-looking banners. "WDHT - We Don't Have Time" is a booming business:

Greta, Inc. (April 2019):
  • WDHT is half climate campaigner, half tech start-up. Launched on Earth Day, 2018, WDHT soon attracted 435 investors who now own 75% of its stock. WDHT currently claims 718,000 member/followers.
  • Rentzhog’s forte is utilizing all manner of social media to spread messages. Interviewed in a business zine he declared: “our goal is to be the biggest player on the internet.” WDHT sells carbon offsets; provides internet advertising services for sustainable development firms; and prepares climate ratings on businesses and politicians. WDHT’s board includes directors connected to Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft.

I'll be curious to see if the Sunday Times prints Dr. Higgs' letter, but since The Times is putting up a pay wall these days, my chances are slim even if it does get published.

I used to get accused of being in the pay of "big oil"
Before Google algorithims ensured very few new readers found my place.

It would be nice to be paid by someone for all the effort made, but, there is no money in truth telling.

Only in agenda promoting.

Which is why even I'd never heard of this friends of science group- going to check them out though.

Wow, Penny; you should see if "big oil" will pay your heating bill. (sarcasm).

Readers: the link I used above is to the Friends of Science BLOG, but here also is the link to their main site:

Gee, I wish they would, because it's still cold here!!!
But it's not going to happen.
Got up this morning to what 2 C- It was 35 F.
We have a weather station in our yard.

And of course the furnace kicked in, despite my turning it down (hopeful but silly) cause it was freezing in the house this morning. Yes, the heat has been on for nearly 8 months now

Our tomato plants are small from lack of sun and warmth
I've been moving them around to get the sun all morning.

Hard to believe next week end is the official start to gardening.. lol- it's going to be a few weeks still (shorter growing season- noticeably, so)

Good lord, I thought by now you would at least be able to get your garden going!

By the way, I mentioned your garden to Roger Higgs, and included your blog URL. I thought he might want to know about things like that.

If it's any consolation, he says, "We're going to win" ;-)

Of course, if he's right about the reasons, then you might well have late planting seasons for another several years at least. That's a bummer.

Too bad, it doesn't look like the Roger Higgs letter made it into the Sunday Times or did I miss it?

You have some good information here, Yaya. So, WDHT is just another money-making opportunity off this AGW carbon scam. I shouldn't be surprised.

I have been troubled for some time with the fossil fuel industries' support of both sides. Of course, they try to keep it hidden. Skeptics are always accused of being in cahoots - that's the first line of defence for the AGW supporters. Leave a comment anywhere with a link to some good information and immediately, someone will respond claiming the linked author is beholden to the oil industry. It's not as obvious that the industry is also funding the AGW carbon scam, but it's there, and I wasn't sure of the reason. Thank you for spelling it out - the war industry benefits and the "cap and trade".

Speaking of "cap and trade", our recently elected right-wing government in Alberta (Kenney as Premier) is shortly going to end the carbon tax instituted by the previous NDP government. That tax was returned to low and middle income people and the remainder used to support projects such as transit, green energy, new industry to use bitumen in Alberta, etc. I was okay with this plan because I just thought of it as a pollution tax. Once Alberta's carbon tax is cancelled, we will be forced into the federal carbon tax. In its current form, the collected money is mainly returned to the population, but I don't think that is the ultimate aim. I'm starting to see that the behind-the-scenes controllers don't want provinces having their own carbon taxes that they MAY use to help their local economies; they want to transition to a "cap and trade" that benefits multinationals. It's much easier for them if their puppet leaders in the federal government are in control of this money across the country.

Hi Jill: Good to hear from you. You're right about the Sunday Times; I couldn't see Dr. Higgs' letter there either. Maybe next week.

I'm sure you're aware that Jason Kenney (shudder) will say and do whatever keeps him front and centre, as in the old Harper days. On a whim, I used DuckDuckGo to search "Jason Kenney narcissist" and it looks as if I'm not the only one who thinks of him that way.

"There’s a growing consensus that a lot of the time he just makes stuff up."
https://albertapolitics.ca/2017/12/discomfort-ucp-leader-jason-kenneys-relationship-truth-winkles-respectable-circles/

The minute I saw this photo of him, for example, I immediately thought "evangelist", and of course that very term spells "liar" to me.
https://www.nationalobserver.com/2016/07/06/news/six-things-everyone-should-know-about-jason-kenney

He's had trouble keeping a front row image in parliament since the Harper days, and I guess he expects Trudeau to be re-elected, which might explain why he quit federal politics and decided to be the big fish in a smaller pond. He's kind of like the Wizard of Oz but skeptics insist on looking behind the curtain so he has to change tack all the time.

I suspect that too many Albertans aren't as sagacious as you are. Pity. Yes, he'll make it look as if he's allowed a load to be lifted off Albertans by cancellation of the carbon tax, and he won't be to blame for the federal levy and can remain on the good side of his support system.

Oh well, Ontario has Doug Ford, so we can't claim any kind of superiority. Business comes first, nature second, and we can always blame nature's problems on "climate change". But even though Trudeau attempted to suggest that flooding is a hazard of "climate change", there are media reports that strongly point elsewhere:

I really do commiserate with you having Doug Ford as your so-called leader. There's a slight possibility your election could have been tampered with, though, right? Don't you have electronic voting? Unfortunately, the same can't be said here because we still use paper ballots. People are scared because the boom is gone and they just can't accept it and move on. If they can vote for a huckster like Kenney to save them, I fear who/what they will turn to when global cooling becomes obvious and begins affecting their lives.

I had to laugh at the Kenny photo you described looking like an evangelist - so true. The National Observer article was insightful, didn't know the niqab ban was his idea. We're in for a rough four years...

I just wanted to clarify, by my support of a pollution tax, I wasn't considering CO2 as a pollutant. As most people know, the fossil fuel industry produces massive toxic waste on the land, water, and in the air.

Oh, and Kenney just announced today that May 30 2019 will be the end of the Alberta Carbon (in my mind, "pollution") Tax. So many lost opportunities to diversify and boost small-scale solar, among other important projects for a hopeful future.

I hear you, Jill. If they just focus on carbon it does nothing to mitigate pollution, since carbon really isn't a problem and so many other things are:

The Ontario voting itself wasn't electronic, but the tabulation of the votes was and there were all kinds of snafus, and prior to that there were technical snags at Canada Post that delayed and prevented the sending out of voter cards (I never received one). Upshot was that I never got to vote at all.

See: https://www.yayacanada.ca/home/ford-nation-and-a-sleazy-election-all-round

It seems there's a machine called corporatism running things behind the scene, so it really doesn't matter how people vote, I guess -- the markets rule just about everything except decisions about religious apparel.
