UK women wear cardigans during 1976 "heatwave".

Something is wrong with the above picture. In fact, something is wrong with much of the media hype about the weather.  It's almost as bad as the continual scrabbling for something horrific to insinuate about Russia/Trump. (Fortunately, Snopes doesn't hold with the media reports that Russia is hacking America's power grid.)

Nowadays, the media tend to report only "the best" or the "the worst" with no boring in-between. Somebody should tell them that Dickens was not thinking about the future when he penned his famous quote.

For starters, it would be nice to know whether the stats given are for average weather, predicted weather or actual weather (and if so, was it the mean temperature or a named locality?).

Are forecasts deliberately exaggerated?  As an example: for the region in which I live, Environment Canada has, at least twice this month, posted big banner notices shouting: "Severe Thunderstorm Warning"  though none actually occurred, and many of the predicted temperatures have been at least a couple of degrees higher than those actually reached. So, I can't help feeling cautious about the the weather reports coming out of the UK.

The Guardian reports that Britain's current heatwave has reached 32.4C (90.3F).
  • The hottest UK heatwave on record remains that of 1976, when there were 15 consecutive days of 32C or more.
  •  A temperature of 35.9C was recorded on 3 July 1976  in Cheltenham. (See image above)

Now let's look at the UK's heatwave history (Guardian), which is hardly a recent phenomenon since, as early as August 10, 1911 (36.7C) the recorded temp for the UK was said to be "the hottest day in seventy years".

Which suggests that, in 1841*, the temp was even hotter than in 1911.**

BT News differed:-

BT News: Hottest on record: When was the UK’s hottest summer?
  • The hottest period occurred between June 23, 1976 and July 7, when for 15 consecutive days the temperature topped 32C (90F) every day at one or more stations in England.
  • However, the mercury climbed yet further in early July, with Cheltenham recording 35.9C on July 3, 1976 - the highest temperature recorded during the heatwave.

Just to confuse things further, the BBC had this to say in 2009:
  • Temperatures above 30C (86F) are unusual, but the hottest temperature on record for the month of July is a scorching 36.5C (97.7F), recorded in Wisley, Surrey, on 19 July 2006.

And today, BT reported:
  • The Met Office has raised the possibility the UK could see the all-time record of 38.5C broken on Friday.

From whence cameth that "all-time record"?

The overall impression being that the hottest temps have been in this century, but what about  *1841 -- and ** 1911?

Yah, when it's a heat wave I'm know to wear my shirt cardigan and skirt as well. Pantyhose too!

Or my long pants, and shirt, Maybe my mock neck light sweater- Cause that's what you wear when it's a frikkin' heatwave!

Lack of rain fall may have been a problem, but, heat doesn't appear to be an issue for those women.

Thanks for a good laff, Penny, though I know how serious you are about the climate hype (me too). A Toronto friend, who knows people who live very close to the recent shooting scene, told me to have a cheerful day, and your comment helped a lot. ;-))

I can't remember the last time I wore a skirt or pantyhose. (And that's not just senile bad memory. Haha.) I've got two big fans aimed at me and it's just normal July weather! Those UK women are real troopers - to say the least!
