Mandated dependence on the kindness of strangers

Mandated dependence on the kindness of strangers ...

"I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."
Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire.

We must keep in mind that Blanche Dubois was diagnosed as insane. Granted, there are a lot of kind people in our environment but one has to wonder if it's only because they are Blanches themselves and so can relate.  Once given power over other people, how would some of those same people react?  Well, they locked up poor Blanche, didn't they?

And Yours Truly has experienced first hand (as did Blanche) how pompous and controlling some others can be when they've been given licence to order folks around.

I should mention that this post began as a reply to a comment and a video link from one of my very favourite readers, but it kind of got out of hand. I want to offer my sincere thanks to M.R. It does make me happy that Ontario MLA Randy Hillier is still getting the word out about masks, but it might not be wise to count on his assurance that others won't resent us for not wearing one.

Randy Hillier's message: Just tell people you're unable to wear a mask and they will understand. (YouTube)

Unfortunately, it was not made terribly clear at the beginning of the mask edict in what circumstances a person could abstain from wearing one.  It is still not clear to the average mask wearer on the street, who relies on TV for news, and therefore has not been apprised of there being any exemption clause embedded in the order.

Masks wearers often resent those who go barefaced, partly out of fear and partly out of ignorance.  I was well-received by the DollarTree, for example, but the cashier was forced to explain to a mask-wearing customer why I was allowed to be there without one. I felt bad for the very kind cashier, and have hesitated to return there because I don't want to create negative attention from people ignorant of the rules.

It's true that certain people are not likely to encounter opposition. Randy Hillier's face is familiar in his home community in Toronto because he is an MLA.  Former university professor Denis Rancourt, now prominent in online videos, being interviewed by "important" people, says he was not questioned at all when he went maskless on Ottawa's public transportation system.

But, "th, th, th, that's easy for them to say." (Porky Pig)

And I dare say: they are also mature males, and tall and/or portly ("people tend to vote for portly people, but only if they're male": LiveScience).

Neither Randy nor Denis are short-ish, white-haired old women like myself who prefers to keep a reasonably low local profile due to being a political blogger. I don't even qualify as a member of the much-reviled "boomer" class, having been born at the outset of WWII, though I'm not alone in suspecting it isn't mere coincidence that so many nursing home residents died early in the Covid game (scroll down this page to read the official report).

The global show is being run by publicly-avowed "Malthusians" (read the book), and there does exist among the young (now called millennials), a certain attitude toward the elderly that includes the sentiment "drain on society".

Population, Resources, Environment: Dimensions of the Human Predicament.
  • It is clear that the future course of history will be determined by the rates at which people breed and die, by the rapidity with which nonrenewable resources are consumed, by the extent and speed with which agricultural production can be improved, by the rate at which the underdeveloped areas can industrialize, by the rapidity with which we are able to develop new resources, as well as by the extent to which we succeed in avoiding future wars. All of these factors are interlocked.

My daughter had to suffer through that book in university and, sadly, it was pure prophecy.

Yes, I have an autistic grandson -- one of the many victims of the MMR vaccine. See the YouTube-banned movie "Vaxxed" on Bit Chute and try to consider with an open mind the first-hand experience of parents and the statistics that show the numbers of autism cases growing exponentially with the numbers of childhood vaccinations, or how their generation may be viewed by vaccine enthusiasts like Bill Gates, who somehow gets away with openly equating population reduction with his beloved vaccines.

Gates himself and one of his cohorts, George Soros (esteemed friend of Canada), are no longer spring chickens, but are revered by social climbers solely because of their massive wealth, while other oldies are increasingly resented by millennials as a drain on society, regardless of how they spent their lives contributing through both taxation and as willing volunteers in local community services of one sort or another.

But I digress. We were talking about how easy it is, in the minds of some prominent persons, to just not wear a mask when out on the town.  (First of all, I'm not even supposed to be out on the town except to buy necessary supplies.)

In my first attempt, I was accosted by a black attired, padded-vest wearing, "millennial" security guard who glared at me over his black mask, pointed his finger at me (if he had a gun I feel certain he would have pointed that at me), and literally ordered me out of the store.  When I told him I was exempt, and that I had phoned ahead and been told by a man in the upstairs office that I could come early in the morning, he did not bother to consult with the guy upstairs, and both he and a clerk stared at me closely, as if searching for pox, and demanded to know what ailment I suffered from.

None of the staff there knew that a person could abstain. That was at Dollarama, which obviously acted in bad faith to begin with or they would not have hired a "security" guard when the mandate came down.

In the two rude cases I encountered (see also Food Basics below), I received very loud threats that caused other customers in the store to stop and watch. I reported both cases to their Head Offices and got an apology, and maybe I've improved things somewhat for other shoppers, but I still have trouble with the thought of going back into those stores.

After I wrote to Dollarama's head office, the Kingston Public Health website updated its instructions to make them clearer.  But a lot of people I've talked to have no idea what's on the Public Health website. They get their news from the Boob Tube and you can be sure the bought-and-paid-for media won't remind you that it's okay to plead exemption.

Even people in my apt. building thought that there were a lot more people in hospital after a group of nail salons were raided and the local rag reported a whole slew of new Covid "cases" - but a glance at the Public Health site (Status of Cases) showed there was no one dead or hospitalised; it's just that they had ordered all of the staff and customers to be tested, and a number of them tested positive.

Be aware of this fact: when the authorities say "cases" they don't mean sick people, they mean people who tested positive.  And if they were strictly honest, they wouldn't even be so sure the tests were accurate.  But it makes for great reinforcement in maintaining the requisite fear levels.

The city inspectors took full advantage of the Covid rules to raid those salons and find all kinds of nit-picking infractions, which surely scared the wits out of the proprietors and their staff -- not to mention their clientele. Is this a developing attitude toward small businesses in general?  It would certainly seem to be in keeping with the continuing destruction of so many of them.

Due to the sensational media (talk about "conspiracy theorists"!), now everybody in Kingston thinks you can get Covid at the nail salons, and my neighbour down the hall firmly believes that people who wear masks are protecting her from Covid. Her "nurse" daughter told her that. Yet, the nail salon employees had worn masks from the moment the orders came down and most of the customers complied as well.

Randy can say what he likes about Kingston, and I know he means well, but he doesn't live here. And as I said, he's a man well-known in his own community, just as is Denis Rancourt. Wimps don't approach public personalities unless it's to get their autograph. That's why Trudeau, Ford, and the rest get away with stuff "ordinary" folks aren't allowed to. Trudeau has been caught at it more than once, yet his poll numbers rise because of how he is perceived to have been "protecting" the population from Covid. The guy is merely following orders from his WHO connections!!

Sorry, M.R., I know this seems like a grouchy sermon though you meant to cheer me up, and I love you for that, but even before the masks were ordered to be worn, I experienced loud, rude treatment at Food Basics for getting too close to the cashier as I loaded my purchases onto the counter and she was behind a plastic shield - and at Metro for not moving fast enough by the guy who controlled the lineup into the store.  It's because of their own fear that they do this; they are not rational. But demeaning their own customers reveals that they're also not very bright.

Needless to say, there are some people who should not be allowed even a smidgin of authority. I have, however, consistently been treated kindly at Shopper's and at the Dollar Tree. And they are the stores that will continue to get my business when and if this monstrous insanity comes to an end.

As far as the local city councillors and their lame-brained "public health" officials are concerned, I haven't an ounce of respect left for them.

The whole mask thing still strikes me as something surreal and bizarre. I feel gobsmacked at times by all the bizarre ness. I actually saw one man walking around with a respirator
Like this.

In walmart- I rarely, rarely go to walmart. My concern there is always how absolutely filthy the store as. As well as about a third of their customer base. Who stink.
I wouldn't put my one item on the conveyor it was sooooo dirty.
It's not covid. It's filth.

But your right, the mask mandate, does leave you dependent on the kindness of others.. But so far, so good. I am proactive. Inform I'm exempt and reassure I will keep my social distance. I smile and chat when ever possible. A masked taller man even reached something to high for me to reach and I thanked him- he assured me it was no problem.

Some people are just a - holes, no matter when, where or why.
But I stick to familiar places, that's for sure.

Hey, Penny: I know about the gobsmacked feeling, for sure. It's hard to believe how some people can behave under certain circumstances, and it's way too touching when people are decent toward you.

I don't know much about WalMart except that it's considered essential -- like the liquor stores. But if it's also ill-kept, I sure wouldn't shop there.

You've had a lot to deal with in recent times. I hope you're getting enough rest. Thanks for taking the time to stop by!

Hi Yaya
I believe you are absolutely correct about authority and what that does to people. The Stanford prison experiments taught us that and apparently we have learned absolutely nothing from that experiment. Speaking of experiments the one we are living through is going to come to an end one way or another. I think one of the reasons it's being prolonged is so that certain people on city councils and health departments can sneak out and avoid getting tarred and feathered when this house of cards comes down.

Yes, James, the Stanford Prison Experiment certainly appeared to prove that some people should never be put into positions of authority. I don't have the stomach to watch a film like that, but I do get the picture.

I like your image of a house of cards, though. Thanks. I'll keep that picture in my mind and maybe it will manifest.

I haven't been to Walmart (in another town) for weeks but went yesterday for items we can't get here in our one and only grocery store. What struck me upon entering was the heavy stench of disinfectant -- made my nose crinkle. Gracious, what if I had sneezed? I'd have been evicted for sure. The food aisles are just inside the inner doors so I wondered if the fresh fruit and vegies got hit by overspray. Thankfully we were picking up just a few packaged items and were able to leave in a very short period of time.

I have always held my breath until past the perfume counters in department stores and I avoid the soap aisles whenever possible, so I felt like it was an olfactory assault at Walmart that day. (Couldn't they spray after hours?) Am I more comfortable with the germs than the attempts to eliminate them? Maybe I'm just too strange by far.

You're not strange, M.R. You're a human being. We are covered and filled with viruses and bacteria. We're walking critter cages. We should be comfortable with them. They keep us alive. But you already know that because I remember you talking about the microbiome and I had to look it up.

I think it's a very bad thing to mess with the critters we already have by shooting us up with vaccines. It may also be a little bit crazy to visit Walmart.

It's been a long allergy season this year, so I often take an antihistamine before I go shopping, for the same reason you're worried you might sneeze. I don't dare wipe my nose with a tissue in front of other people.

Nevermind, James says this whole crazy setup is going to collapse like a house of cards, and I have decided to believe he's right.
