Kill the Nanny Bill, kiddies ...

Let grownups die as they see fit!

CTV: Assisted dying bill gets mixed reviews, raises fears of more restrictions

Kill the bill; kill it dead.  No bill, no restrictions.  Get on with the business of government and stay out of the bedrooms of the nation!

Sickrooms are usually bedrooms, aren't they?

Justin, listen to your father; Liberals in general, listen to your hero: "There's no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation".

  • Bill C-7, introduced Monday, would remove a provision in the four-year-old assisted dying law that restricted the procedure to those whose natural death is "reasonably foreseeable" -- a restriction that was struck down as unconstitutional by a Quebec court last fall.
  • But the revised law would still use the notion of reasonable foreseeability to impose a number of restrictions on those who are not near death that wouldn't apply to those who are.
  • Both [Prof. Jocelyn] Downie and [Dr. Stephanie] Green said they're concerned that the bill might narrow the concept of reasonably foreseeable death, which has been interpreted to mean that a person is on a trajectory towards death -- be it in one, two, three or more years.

CTV: Justice Minister David Lametti says that there is a "very real possibility" that the Liberals will allow a free vote on the government's medically-assisted dying legislation.

Good grief.  How can Members of Parliament, who are accustomed to being "whipped" into voting the party line, present themselves as capable of making any decision at all?  Even if a free vote is allowed, do we seriously think they aren't going to look to some kind of bellwether to guide their thinking?

Well, okay, you guys; listen to me!

Setting rules such as how much time a person may have left before being allowed to exit is insanity.
Face it folks: we are ALL on a trajectory towards death!  Yours or mine could occur at any moment.

But look on the sunny side. Somebody who dies today could escape Covid-19 (or worse) tomorrow.

Sorry, bad joke, I know, but the Lib government has much heavier things to concern itself with, so important that even "climate change" has had to be put on the back burner -- or was that just an excuse to explain away the dissonance in the words of our tap dancing Minister of Everything:

From GlobalNews:
  • “I think we need to treat Teck’s withdrawal as a wake up-call for our country and say, now is the time to do that hard work and actually face up to the fact that it’s a challenge — it’s a real challenge — to reconcile ambitious action on climate change and a strong economy and a strong oil and gas sector,” she said.
  • “But we can do it and I think now is the moment for us to do that work.”

Well, she didn't use the words, "grow the economy" but she's such an expert at blarney I suspect she must be a cousin of the Trudeaus.

It's not a challenge at all; that's a big fat lie. There's absolutely no way to "reconcile" concern about "climate change" with the railroading of the nature-loving Wet'suwet'en people on behalf of big oil and gas.

I think the word that Freeland must have been looking for, rather than "reconcile" is "dichotomize" (divide into two opposing groups or kinds). That's the stuff that split personalities are made of, eh?

I'm sorry; I'm really sorry; but I have to say that I don't know how these people don't crack up laughing hysterically at some of the mindless things that come out of their mouths.  Surely, they know when they're spouting self-serving political mumbo with a large pinch of added jumbo.

One thing we don't need, for sure, is a "nanny state". "Liberal" should mean getting off the backs of adults, and letting them live -- or die, if that's what they prefer.

Any laws being struck should be for our protection - like guns being registered, and speed levels on highways, and industrial safety oversight both for workers and consumers -- those sorts of things.  Otherwise, they should mind their own business with regard to decisions made personally by adults that do no harm to other humans.

There are barely enough good nannies to go around for the kiddies; they shouldn't be squandered on protecting us raisins from ourselves.

Medical professionals harm humans every day, and continue to be revered as "experts" who can tell you how and how not to be.  Just once I'd like to see them back off and let a person live or die by his/her own lights.

A government that calls itself "Liberal" has no business deciding when any adult should or should not take their leave of this world -- regardless of how many potential years may be predicted for them -- especially if the years left show every indication of being years of pain for that person and the loved ones who must suffer through it with them.

So far, they have not had the gall to create a law against procreation without an up-to-date, paid-for permit -- although as populations increase that's not beyond the realm of possible legislation by those who call themselves "public servants" -- so also should they mind their own business when people decide it's time to say "sayonara".

Furthermore, why would anybody need the presence of a physician to sit and stare at them as they die?  Why can't a person just buy the seconal and down it?  What's the worst that could happen?  They would die, right?

The instructions are out there for all to see. Secobarbital/Seconal is most definitely the drug of choice for comfort and effectiveness.  I haven't yet got my hands on any of it, and there's no urgency because I figure I'll be around for a while, but at least I know what I can do if I end up facing dependence on the kindness of relatives or paid strangers.

(By the way, Seconal has a decades long shelf-life.)

The fates will provide my way out, I feel confident of that, having been pretty lucky, despite some potentially very damaging circumstances, thoughout my life.

It seems ghoulish for any medical person to be willing to sit there and supervise a death. They're supposed to be healers, not grim reapers!  When I die, I'm not going to go in peace with some supercilious authority recording my every twitch. Talk about performance anxiety!  Who needs that?

This whole issue is worrisome, especially if the Cons squeak in next time around, and the religious right raises the ante, and starts messing around with, for instance, abortion laws.  (As I've said time and again, I personally could never have sought an abortion, but that doesn't give me the right to vilify women who do, or to feel holier than they.) And if I decide, by their wisdom, to be consigned to hellfire for having ended my own life without their say-so (in other words "God's permission") that's going to be my business and nobody else's, and once it's done they can't do a dang thing about it, except maybe enjoy envisioning me burning in Hades.

To politicos everywhere: we didn't vote for a nanny state!  We voted for promised fair, sane and equal treatment -- you know: Liberal. So, quit messing around with nanny laws, especially the immutable, eternal, God-given if you like, laws that people, who haven't lived long enough to have even had enough experience to fully comprehend, should not be messing around with.

Giving us liberty means giving us death if we so choose it, and in the manner we so choose. Especially since smokers, alcoholics, potheads, and the dangerously obese are given carte blanche under the laws of the country to take serious risks every day with their own lives -- and even to become Parliamentarians.

Thanks, Chycho!

Sheesh: they're going to get some of us raisins so upset we have fatal heart attacks and then they'll be murderers. And they should remember there's laws against that. LOL

Yaya, you're not a raisin!
Not in the dried wrinkled sense of the word-

You're a raisin in that good sense of the word,

I happen to like raisins a great deal. That contradiction of sweet and tarty. Making my oatmeal and many cookies tasting so much better. They pack a punch for a tiny package.

re: this right to die stuff.

I honestly believe the government wishes to take away the personal choice involved and leave it to the doctor to dictate and as you've rightly pointed out

Doctors, do indeed, cause a great deal of harm.

Hey, Penny: stop torturing me. I can smell those cookies from here! I'm trying to cut back right now and I think about cookies all the time.

Yeah, doctors do harm, but they mean well, don't you think? LOL
