Bloggers being reassigned to a refuse bin?
In my previous post I thought I had coined a name for the dark area of the Internet to which the FCC wants all but the corporate/government media consigned. I called it the Outernet, but today I find that there is an actual "Outernet" that's been designed to provide a unique kind of access to information.
The declared owner of "Outernet" says this on Quora:
When I was a kid, DVBS meant Daily Vacation Bible School, but now it's only a tuner - much safer and saner -- although, the Outernet people acknowledge that they "may not actually be solving a problem that is relevant to most Americans, but information access is a serious issue to billions of people all over the world."
This clearly says (to me, at least) that where bucks are to be made, the "Information Highway" will eventually be more profitable wherever the Internet is currently absent.
The Outernet is definitely not solving a problem that is relevant to the whole North American continent. We already have an information highway, but roadblocks are being set up that seriously need to be dismantled in the name of the so-called FREEDOM we are so often told we possess.
America - Land of the FREE - and Canada - The True North strong and FREE - that is, unless you use the Internet for free expression.
Takedown of U.S. net neutrality laws may embolden Canadian telecoms to follow suit, says CIRA CEO.
May? Will, if the FCC repeal cannot be reversed. Remember Bill C-51? The Liberals went along with it on the promise that, if elected the following year, they would modify it. But even though the Liberals won the election, the Bill has remained intact, and nobody is jumping up and down about it because the mindset is that Liberal is better than Conservative, no matter what promises they fail to keep. If they can do that, despite the big initial uproar, they can do whatever.
Especially when the US leads the way. Peaceful Canada even helped with the slaughter of Afghanis who had nothing to do with 9/11.
Bell Canada’s Call For Website Blocking ‘Outrageous,' Advocates Say
A rule of thumb for me is that when there is a big outcry for the freedom to constrict freedom, then it's already being done. I know for a fact that Bell Canada is already blocking certain websites, because I tried to access a Canadian version of the Pirate Bay a week or so ago, on the off-chance they might have an old, obscure documentary I couldn't find anywhere else, and Bell barred the way. Profits always trump human rights.
I'm forced to use Bell for the Internet because they have dibs on "Fibe to the Home" - that our tax dollars helped to finance! So I decided that I didn't need "unlimited access" and I cancelled that feature. If it's all about money, then let Bell lose $15 a month that I have better use for.
A well-known Google blog, PennyForYourThoughts, which has been active for a decade is now being relegated by Google's own search algorithms to the Dumpsternet.
Yet, they allow and direct all readers to their so called authoritative aka 5 eyes media resources ... the main progenitor of fake news.
Penny then presents a long list of "whoppers brought to us all by the 5 eyes media", which is well worth a look.
When Yours Truly decided to re-enter the blogosphere after a few years' absence, I felt quite comfortable with the reality that it would take some time to rebuild my earlier Internet notoriety. No hurry, I thought - just write relevant stuff and it will eventually be picked up just as it was in the old days. It bothered me a bit that the best deal I seemed able to get was with a Weebly site located on a US server, but it came with a dot ca URL and that seemed okay.
I had started out in 2003 with a dot com site that became a burden to me since writing in HTML and doing my own archiving was taking up too much of my time and energy. So I slowly eased out of that and into a free Google blog (see it on the Way Back Machine), which was much easier to maintain. When I finally shut down the blog to get a much-needed rest, I assumed it no longer existed, but very soon Google gave it away to a foreign language blogger, who apparently wanted a free ride and a free reputation -- and, for a while, even displayed my "Y" logo.
When I complained to Google the response was that I needed to provide them with my personal ID information and signature. Hmmm, I thought. Nobody asked that of the person who co-opted my blog site. So, it became clear to me that Google, at best, is a very fickle lover.
My original site, YayaCanada.com is still available (here) at a price of $3,900. Yeah, like I'm going to pay that when it was my hard work that made the URL so valuable. LESSON LEARNED: park your domain; don't ditch it, in case you want to use it again!
But maybe it's a lesson too late for the learning (YouTube). Here I am blogging again, yet may never fully retrieve my old audience because of something called "algorithm" and "fast-lane-slow-lane".
Well, at least I have a place where I can gripe about it.
